Faqs about Westminster

When do you meet?

Our morning worship service meets on Sundays at 9:30 am, followed by coffee and conversation at 10:45 and Sunday School for children, youth, college, and adults at 11. We return for worship at 6 pm on Sundays. We also meet on Wednesday nights during the Fall, Winter, and Spring for a fellowship meal, prayer time, youth group and children’s Catechism classes. Choir also meets on Wednesdays.

What's your worship like?

Our worship services are shaped by our commitment as Presbyterians to do in worship only those things that we see taught in the Scriptures when it instructs us how we’re to worship God as His people.  The reading and preaching of Scripture, the singing of hymns old and new, prayers of adoration and confession and petition and commitment, the celebration of the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, all enjoyed in the fellowship of God’s people are regular parts of an ordinary service.

Our music is a blend of rich traditional hymns and newer hymns of praise, all of which are brought together and flow out of the sermon text for the day.  We are assisted in worship by a choir, pianist, strings and horns, all of whom work together to help us “enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise” every time we gather on the Lord’s Day.

We celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday morning and the third Sunday evening of each month.

What do I do with my children?

We love children here at Westminster and welcome you to keep them with you during the service.  However, for your convenience, a nursery for infants through toddlers is available at all services. We will do our best to see that your child will receive lots of loving attention from the staff and volunteers who work in the nursery each week.

For your older children, a specially-designed Children’s Bulletin and crayons are available at the information table at the entrance to the Childcare Center located on the left side of the main lobby.

What should I wear?

There is no dress code at Westminster, so don’t let clothes keep you away. You’ll see some men in coats and ties and women in dresses, but others will come in more casual dress.  You are more important to us than your clothes!

What kind of ‘Presbyterian’ are you?

Westminster is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). The PCA was established in 1973 by a number of like-minded congregations seeking a denomination that was devoted to the authority of Scripture and the proclamation of the gospel to the nations.  The motto of the denomination at its founding is the same as it is today:

“True to the Scriptures, the Reformed faith, and obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ”

In the early days of the denomination, the PCA was largely comprised of congregations in the Deep South.  In 1983, the Reformed Presbyterian Church Evangelical Synod joined and was received by the PCA, expanding the denomination into a truly North American church by bringing in congregations across the United States and Canada.  The PCA has over 380,000 members and 1,500 churches, with the largest evangelical Presbyterian mission force in the world.

Westminster has served Huntsville and Madison County for over 50 years through its ministry as a congregation and through our K-12 school, Westminster Christian Academy.  We are a part of Providence Presbytery (our regional body), which seeks to bind us together in fellowship, plant churches and advance the Kingdom of God here in north Alabama.
